Albanian Alps Tour – 3 Day Hiking Tour of Theth, Valbona and Lake Koman Ferry from Tirana

I really enjoy guiding the Albanian Alps tour, because in the Albanian Alps you are surrounded by stunning nature. During the Albanian Alps tour, you will hike to the Blue Eye of Theth, cross the Valbone Pass and take the Lake Koman Ferry.

Why should I go on an Albanian Alps tour? You should go on an Albanian Alps tour, because it is an adventure to explore the remote mountain range in the North of Albania. You will challenge yourself by hiking across the 1800 meter high Valbone Pass. You can swim in the Blue Eye of Theth mountain pool. You will stay in a guest house in a remote mountain village. And experience the Lake Koman Ferry, one of the World’s best boat trips.

Many travellers in Albania, do not realize how remote the Albanian Alps actually are. For instance, you can only reach Theth with a four-wheel drive, due to the turning and twisting mountain road. Moreover, the only way to travel from Theth to Valbone is by hiking across the Valbone Pass. Therefore, let me take care of your private transportation and tour guide, so that you can fully experience the isolated beauty of the Albanian Alps.

Albanian Alps Tour Details

The Albanian Alps are a remote mountain range, which stretches across the borders of Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. The Albanian Alps are also known as the Accursed Mountains, and they remain remote and isolated until this day.

During the 3-day Albanian Alps tour, you will see all the highlights of the gorgeous mountain range in North of Albania.

On the first day, you will travel from the capital city Tirana, to the little mountain village of Theth. Because Theth can only be reached via a turning and twisting mountain road, of which the last part is a stoney dirt track, it remains very remote until this day.

Theth is a little village which is completely surrounded by mountains. Visiting Theth is like disconnecting from the world. In Theth, you are surrounded by mountain peaks, nature, a stunning river and farmlands.

You will also undertake an hour long hike to the Blue Eye of Theth, which is a natural mountain pool. The pool is filled by a little waterfall and it is a magical blue colour. If you dare, you can take a dip in the mountain pool, although the water is ice cold.

The Theth village also has stunning historical buildings, like the Lock-in Tower and the Church of Theth.

The Lock-in Tower is a very interesting monument. In the past, the locals used to follow a set of oral laws, called the “Kanun of Leke Dukajin”. The Lock-in Tower was used to imprison people who violated the Kanun. Moreover, it also brought families together, who were in conflict, so that they could discuss a resolution.

On the second day, you will undertake an impressive day-long hike across the Valbone Pass. You will hike from the Theth village, through the mountains, to the Valbone village on the other side of the Valbone Pass.

The hike through the Albanian Alps is stunning. From the Valbone Pass, which is 1800 meters high, you will have a impressive views of both the Theth valley and the Valbone Valley. You will see green mountain valleys, impressive peaks, local shepards, mountain streams and thick forest.

On the third and final day, you will take the Lake Koman Ferry. The Lake Koman Ferry has been described by the Bradt Guide, as one of the World’s greatest boat trips.

Lake Koman is a very long lake, which turns and twist through the mountains. From the ferry, you will have spectacular views of the green-blue water and the impressive cliffs surrounding the lake.

And the best part about the 3-day Albanian Alps tour is that it is a private tour with private transportation. You will see all the highlights of the Albanian Alps with a private tour guide. Are you ready to expore the natural beauty of the Albanian Alps?

Day 1: Blue Eye of Theth, Lock-in tower of Theth & Church of Theth

Theth National Park
Theth is a small mountain village located in the Theth National Park. The Theth valley is surrounded by the peaks of the Albanian Alps, which are also called the Accursed Mountains. The Theth National Park covers 2630 hectares and it is one of Albania’s most remote areas.

Theth can only be reached with a four-wheel drive car accross a turning and twisting mountain road. The Theth National Park has natural touristic attractions, like the Blue Eye of Theth. And it is a popular destination for hikers.

Blue Eye of Theth
The Blue Eye of Theth is a gorgeous, natural pool in the Theth National Park. From the Theth village, you will take a jeep to the Nderlysa village. From there, you will hike for about 1 hour to reach the Blue Eye of Theth.

The Blue Eye pool has a magical blue color and it is surrounded by beautiful nature. The pool is filled by a small waterfall. There is a wooden picnic plateau on the river, from where you have a stunning view. You can swim in the Blue Eye of Theth, but the water is ice cold, as it comes from the mountains.

Lock-in Tower
The Lock-in Tower is a historical monument in the Theth village. In the old times, the Albanian people followed the traditional law called the “Kanun of Leke Dukagjin”. The Lock-in tower was a place where people who commited a crime according to the Kanun, where imprisoned. And it was also a place where families in conflict, could discuss their issues and come to a resolution.

The Lock-in Tower is a beautiful touristic location, because it is surrounded by the high peaks of the Theth valley. The Theth Lock-in tower originally belonged to the Koceku family and one of the descendants is a guide in the tower today.

Church of Theth
The Church of Theth is a historical church in the Theth village, that was built in 1892. It is a very cute and quaint little church, which is surrounded by the peaks of the Theth valley.

The inhabitants of Theth have been Roman Catholics throughout history. In 1917, the priest of the church opened a school and tought the local children how to read and write in the Albanian language.

Throughout the communist period, Albanians were forced to be atheists, therefore, the building was used as the village hospital. As a result, most of the locals over the age of 25 were born in the church. After the communist period, the church was renovated and it is in service today.

Dinner & Overnight stay at a guest house in Theth

Day 2: Hiking from Theth to Valbona over the Valbona Pass

Breakfast at the guest house in Theth

Hiking across the Valbone Pass
We will start the day early and travel to the beginning of the trail in Theth. On this day, we will hike accross the Valbone Pass, which is 1800 metres high. The route accross the Valbone Pass is absolutely stunning. You will have impressive views of the Albanian Alps and its peaks and valleys. And there are beautiful waterfalls and rivers along the way.

It will take us around 8 hours to hike from Theth to Valbone. You will be guided throughout the hiking trip. You do not have to be an experienced hiker to undertake the hike accross the Valbona Pass. However, you do need to be in an average physical shape. Because the trails are rough in some places.

Moreover, the trail can be tiring in some places, because the trail leads upwards to the Valbone Pass (up to 1800 meters). Similarly, once you have climbed the Valbone Pass, you will need to descend, which can be heavy on your knees. Moreover, you have already hiked on the previous day in Theth, so you legs might feel a little tired already.

Of course, we will make plenty of stops along the way to eat, refresh and take pictures.

Dinner & Overnight stay at a guest house in Valbona

Day 3: Boat ride on the Lake Koman Ferry

Breakfast at the guest house in Valbona

Drive to Fierza to get on the boat
After the breakfast, we will drive to Fierza for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fierza is the place, where the Lake Koman Ferry departs.

Lake Koman Ferry
The boat trip on Lake Koman is one of the most impressive touristic attractions in Albania. Bradt Guide even ranked it as “one of the world’s greatest boat trips”. Actually, the Koman Lake Ferry was meant to be transportation for the locals, but the journey on the lake was so beautiful that it attracks many tourists every year.

The boat trip on Lake Koman is an impressive journey, because the scenery surrounding the lake is spectacular. The water of the lake is a bright turqoise colour and it is very clear. Moreover, the lake is surrounded by high mountain cliffs. The lake twists and turns through the mountain valley and it is a very relaxing to simply sit on board and take in the views.

The boat trip on Lake Koman lasts for about 3 hours and arrives in Koman. From Koman we will drive to Tirana via Shkodra city.

Albanian Alps Tour highlights

Below I have enclosed some pictures of the highlights, that you will visit during the Albanian Alps tour. During the Albanian Alps tour, you will explore stunning natural highlights, like the Blue Eye of Theth mountain pool, the Valbone Pass and the Lake of Koman.

But at the same time, you also get to see the life of the locals in one of Albania’s most remote areas. You will stay in an authentic guest house and you will explore the remote mountain village of Theth by foot.

Blue Eye of Theth

The Blue Eye of Theth is a natural pool in the mountains of Theth. The water in the pool is a magical turquoise colour. Moreover, the pool is filled by a little waterfall. The Blue Eye pool is surrounded by nature and it looks beautiful on photographs.

From the village of Nderlysa, it will take us about 1 hour to hike through the forest to the Blue Eye of Theth. You can swim in the Blue Eye, but bear in mind that the the mountain water is ice-cold.

Staying in a Traditional Guest House

During your tour in the Albanian Alps, you will leave the world as you know it behind. Some of the tourists, who visited the Albanian Alps with me, described it as “going back in time”.

Since it is still difficult to reach the Albanian Alps, the area remains very remote and isolated from the rest of Albania.

In Theth and Valbone, you can experience the authentic mountain culture. You will stay in a traditional guest house and you will enjoy the local cooking. The dishes that are served here are made from biological products from their own garden.

The Church of Theth

The Church of Theth was built in 1892 and it is one of the first buildings that was constructed in the Theth village. The Church is in the middle of the village and it is surrounded by the beautiful mountain landscape.

The inhabitants of Theth were Roman Catholics throughout history. In 1917, the priest opened an Albanian language school in the church and taught the local children how to read and write in their own language. During the communism regime, religion was not permitted and the church served as a health & pregnancy center.

Lock-in Tower of Theth

The Lock-in Tower of Theth is a historical monument, which is 400 years old. In the past, the people in the Albanian Highlands followed an oral law, which was called the Kanun of Leke Dukagjin.

When there would be a conflict or blood feud between two families, the Lock-in tower was used to isolate the next man in line to be killed, as a revenge by the opposing family. The isolation in the tower would only end when the opposing family would grant forgiveness or a member of the killers family was killed in return.

Lake Koman Ferry

Bradt Guides described the Lake Koman Ferry as “one of the World’s classic boat trips”. The ferry journey across Lake Koman is an absolute highlight, that you cannot miss when visiting Albania.

The Lake Koman ferry is a 3-hour boat trip, that takes you from Fierze to Koman (or reverse). The Komani Lake is a very long and narrow lake, which is surrounded by mountain cliffs.

Therefore, you will have stunning views of the surrounding scenery when you are on the ferry boat. Every time, when it seems the Lake Koman ferry will run into a cliff, the lake turns in another direct and reveals another beautiful scenery.

The Lake of Koman is an artificial lake, which was created by the former communist dictator in an effort to create a hydro-electric system.

In fact, the ferry boats on the lake, where merely intended as a way of transportation for the locals. But the journey on Lake Koman is so beautiful, that many tourists took an interest in this adventurous boat journey.

Hiking the Valbone Pass

The hike across the Valbone Pass is a day-long hike. The Valbone Pass is an 1800 meters high mountain pass between the Theth Valley and the Valbone Valley.

Altough it may be unbelievable, there is actually no road connecting the Theth valley and the Valbone valley. Therefore, the only way to get from Theth to Valbone is by foot.

The hike from Theth to Valbone is 9.5 kilometers long, which will take an average hiker between 6-8 hours. Along the route some of the locals sell cold drinks in little cafes.

During your hiking journey, you will see wide valleys, thick forest and impressive peaks. Obviously, the highlight is the stunning view from the Valbone Pass itself, from where you have a panoramic view of both valleys.

Along the trail, you will see shepherd and locals, who live from their farms. Until this day, the Albanian Alps remain remote and very authentic.
